Shaving Strop

Shaving StropRight razor - Buying first Straight razor

Straight razors come in many different styles, grinds and tempers, and as such can be a daunting prospect for someone looking to buy your first straight razor. The question most often asked is, where to start?

This article will guide you to make that first difficult step.

Now that you've decided to buy a razor, you need to know that a razor is actually a very simple device to shave. Unlike its counterparts in modern security and multi-blade razor has an edge that can hold only sharpness when sharpened properly.

The handle portion of a razor, called the "Balance", usually consists of two pieces of film, horn, bone, wood, steel mother of pearl or stainless steel. Exotic woods and materials are sometimes used when a razor existing scales are damaged, or the owner wishes to replace them.

The scales are generally held together with brass pins and washers, one of which is located on the shoulder / tang of the blade which allows you to rotate the razor in the open and closed positions. Most razors are supplied with 2 pins, while some are 3. Typically, 3 pins are used to provide greater strength razors taller and heavier.

razors do not have a lock feature built into them, and are free to open and close with a slight pressure with your thumb. Great care must be taken during the first take control of your razor and open and close for the first time, regardless of the blade is sharp. It is recommended that you do this sitting, using a desk or table covered with a towel to control its action so you can observe the correct use of the razor without crashing or cut.

There are two types of metal used in the construction of the razor, carbon steel and stainless steel. Carbon steel is the most commonly used type of steel used due to be softer than the stainless properties and as such requires less time to produce an edge on it during the process of running.

Although it may seem daunting at first to have more flexible steel in your razor, the advantages far outweigh the use of stainless steel. The reason is that stainless steel is a material much more difficult and requires a much larger effort to perfect it.

Stainless steel is also much easier to clean and resistant to rust, something that the brother of carbon, it is sensitive to the effects.

Whatever the type of razor that you end up buying, grinding and maintenance will be a constant property of a razor that is used on a daily basis and it is always useful to apply a thin layer mineral oil after each shave to protect the blade and prevent rust.

The edge of the blade is constant over the edge until the top edge of the razor when the material of the blade is at its thickest point. This is called milling.

When razors are manufactured, they are produced in a variety of different versions depending on the goal, although usually it is considered that the best kind of the whole scene grind is the grind 'hollow'. In the early days, production has actually been done by hand, even if later on new technologies have been advancing the process of grinding through sewing machine methods.

The hollow earth is one of the most common grind, but is not the only type of grind you will encounter when looking to buy a new straight razor. Razors are also available in the soil quarter, half soil and full wedge.

hollow ground blades are thinner version available and the full corner is the thickest. The obvious difference is that the full wedge has more metal in its construction and as such is best to cut the beard thick.

The disadvantage of open ground razors corner is that they offer less food.
