Shakespeare Travel Did Shakespeare Trip to Verona? How did he know about the balcony? Your question is a bit vague - I think that the balcony was composed as a literary device and as a way to put a barrier between Romeo and Juliet in this scene - but what I know, Shakespeare did not travel to Verona. Remember, it was not very rich and left his family to make money in London. Although almost all the details of Shakespeare's life (including whether or not it exists) is probably a subject of debate for some university somewhere, it is highly unlikely that he traveled outside England. I sincerely doubt he ever went to Verona ... In "Two Gentlemen of Verona", he writes about to sail from there to Milan - they are locked! I agree with Lindsay above, but remember there is all the "white period" in Shakespeare's life, where nothing is known of him for four or five years I think. He could very well have gone to Italy, because that is where many of his pieces are on display. Posted on February 23, 2010.
