Fluoridation Opposition: growing in numbers and science Since Fluoride Action Network (FAN) first issued a statement in August 2007 calling for an end to fluoridation, over 1300 additional professionals signed as further evidence emerges to condemn fluoridation.
Now over 1,850 professionals urge Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted, citing scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight against tooth decay, is ineffective and entails serious risks to health. See statement:
Since the first statement FAN, the following occurred:
- The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, leader of Canada's environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation.
- The National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this warning: "Individuals with CKD [chronic kidney] disease should be advised of the potential risk of fluoride exposure."
- Information seekers in October 6, 2007 the British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical.
- "A qualitative examination of the ... studies have found a consistent association between exposure and high fluoride and low IQ," said Tang et al. In "Fluoride and children's intelligence: A meta-analysis "in Biological Trace Element Research (e-published 8/10/08)
- Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Recent studies suggest that excessive consumption of fluoride can increase the risk of disorders affecting teeth, bones, brain and thyroid gland"

- An expert panel Health Canada to study the risks of fluoride exposure, the government should reduce the recommended amount in drinking water, encourage the use of toothpaste low fluoride content in children and policy makers of infant formula reduce levels in their products.
